Charles Dickens and company: ‘All the Year Round’ and its writers

In 2014 I discovered a complete set of the magazine, ‘All the Year Round’, edited by Charles Dickens, marked in the margins with the names of all the contributors. Ever since the 1860s these names have been unknown, since Dickens insisted that stories, articles and poetry should all be published anonymously. I revealed this find to scholars at a conference in Belgium in 2015 and it has since been hailed as “the Rosetta stone of Victorian literature” and “the literary find of the century”. In this talk I will give the background to the find and show why it is of such importance. In total almost 400 authors wrote for the magazine, some famous, some forgotten, but many of them interesting or eccentric. I will tell some of their stories, unearthing the lost lives of the company kept by the inimitable, Charles Dickens.
